Hawaii Car Insurance Requirements

Since Hawaii is a no-fault car insurance state all drivers must have personal injury protection in addition to liability insurance. Car insurance laws in Hawaii currently (2010) require all drivers to have the following minimum levels of coverage:

  • $10,000 personal injury protection (per person)
  • $20,000 / $40,000 bodily injury liability
  • $10,000 property damage insurance

Hawaii car insurance laws also require car insurance companies to inform consumers of their right to purchase uninsured/underinsured coverage (UM/UIM car insurance) although consumers have the option of declining such coverage.

Even with no-fault car insurance laws, minimum Hawaii car insurance requirements are far lower than most consumers really need so most drivers opt for additional coverage.

Expanded policy limits well above $100,000 are usually available for additional premium.

Hawaii Car Insurance Companies

In relation to the number of car insurance companies licensed in other states, Hawaii has the lowest number of licensed car insurance companies with just over 40 providers.

This can have advantages and disadvantages so car insurance comparison is critical if you live in the State of Hawaii.

On average, Hawaii drivers pay about 10 percent less than the national average car insurance premium but you still need to shop around in order to know you have the best coverage available.

Hawaii Car Insurance Quotes

Many Hawaii drivers start car insurance comparison online, however, there are still a large number of drivers who simply contact a local agent.

While using a local car insurance agent can have many advantages it does restrict your ability to learn about car insurance freely and gather a full list of car insurance companies without possible undue influence.

Consumers should always visit the Department of Hawaii’s Commerce Division website and learn more about how to get auto insurance in Hawaii before choosing a provider.
