Second, the gender part. Insurance companies believe males are more likely to file claims, as they are more prone to risk-taking behaviors. The premiums in Indianapolis reflect this.

The largest difference within genders is for 17-year-olds at around $2,000 between a male and a female. The smallest difference is with 35-year-olds, where actually females have a higher average premium than males by about $3.
Cheapest ZIP Codes in Indianapolis
You might think as you’re putting in your ZIP code that insurance companies just want to know where you are as part of their demographics. Unfortunately for some and fortunately for others, ZIP codes are actually a part of the quote process.

USAA is clearly the cheapest. Liberty Mutual is clearly the most expensive. After those two, the companies get bunched up in groups. GEICO and State Farm are around $2,600. Nationwide and Farmers are around $3,100. Travelers, American Family, and Progressive are all between $3,700 and $4,300.
Each company varies according to age group and gender, though only slightly. Mostly, the rankings stay about the same.
Best Car Insurance for Commute Rates
Have you ever wondered why car insurance companies ask for the purpose of your vehicle and how far you drive it?
Car insurance companies believe that the farther you drive a car, the more likely you are to file a claim. For that reason, some companies vary their rates based on commute distance and annual mileage.
In Indianapolis, five out of 10 companies do. Those five companies are American Family, GEICO, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, and USAA. The average difference between a 10-mile commute or 6,000 annual miles and a 25-mile commute or 12,000 annual miles is $141.22.

The largest difference is with Liberty Mutual at $322.23. The smallest is with USAA at $48.42.
Best Car Insurance for Coverage Level Rates
In your research, you might have come across the term coverage level. It may have left you more confused than before. After all, what is a coverage level? Let us tell you: It only comes down to two things.
- The number of coverages you have If you have collision on top of liability, you’ll have a higher coverage level.
- The limits on the coverage If you have a $100,000 liability coverage limit, it’s a higher coverage level than with a $50,000 coverage limit
Sometimes the difference between a high coverage level and a low coverage level is just $100. Often, however, it’s around $200 or more.
The average difference between a high coverage level and a low coverage level in Indianapolis is $240.42. The largest difference is with Progressive at $535.26. The lowest is Nationwide at -$46.75.

This, according to Consumer Reports.
Often, poor credit history can cost someone thousands of dollars, compared with if they had a good credit history. In Indianapolis, six out of the top 10 companies have at least a $1,000 difference between rates for poor versus good credit histories.
The average difference in rates between poor credit history and good credit history is $1,480.48. Liberty Mutual has the largest difference at $3,248.39. USAA has the smallest difference at $1,066.21.
As an example, your credit score might land in one of those three spots. Your average rates would be between $3,300 and $4,500.

For this, we looked at driving record rates from the top 10 companies for three common driving infractions. Those are for one accident, one DUI, and one speeding ticket. Some companies rank differently for different infractions.

Every year the Brookings Insistute releases a Metro Report that analyzes trends in a city by many factors. Two of these are growth and prosperity and each has an impact tangentially on car insurance rates.
- Growth the number of jobs a city has and its rise or fall in its gross metropolitan product (GMP) can affect how many drivers are uninsured
- Prosperity the standard of living and average annual wage can affect how much people are paying for car insurance as a percentage of their paychecks
Out of major metro areas in the United States from 2007 to 2017, Indianapolis ranked 38th in growth.

It ranked 60th overall in prosperity.

Along with growth and prosperity, your household income affects your car insurance rates. But it does so in a way you might not expect. That is, it affects how much you pay for your car insurance as a percentage of your income.
We call this statistic Premium as a Percentage of Income. It comes from dividing your premium by your annual income.
The following data about median income levels comes from Data USA. It is a team of data scientists that uses public data to come up with statistics about income levels, homeownership, and education, among others.
In Indianapolis, for instance, the median income level is $47,225.00. The average premium is $3,512.78. Therefore, the premium as a percentage of income for the average Indianapolis resident is 7.43 percent. This is in the middle when compared to other major Indiana cities.

Homeownership in the Indianapolis

And you wouldn’t be out of line. Most people don’t know that owning a home can actually influence your car insurance rates. For one, insurance companies believe that someone who owns a home is more responsible.
But also, a homeowner has options toward discounts that people who rent do not. Many companies offer discounts to homeowners, sometimes lowering rates by 5 to 10 percent.
The Consumer Federation of American also notes in its study that, on average, renters faced premiums 7 percent higher than those who owned homes.

In Indianapolis, the median property value was $137,600 in 2017. This is up from $128,200 in 2016, a rise of around $2,864. The rent to own statistics, however, show that more Indianapolis residents are renting compared to the nationwide average.

The median in-state public academic year cost was $8,141 in 2016. The median academic year cost for a private college or university was $26,920.
Total, nearly 35,000 degrees were awarded in 2016, with the majority coming from the top three colleges or universities.

This data from Data USA for the next two sections about wages covers Indiana as a whole rather than Indianapolis. This is because the information for wages was not available at the metropolitan or city level.

This drastically affects premiums as a percentage of income. Within the miscellaneous manager position, the lowest-earning race pays more than 1.5 percent more out of their income on car insurance compared to the highest-earning race.
Within the other two categories, the disparity is even larger.
Wage by Gender in Common Jobs
Women earn less than men. That is common knowledge. Payscale writes that women on average 79 cents to every dollar that men make.
This has a real impact on how much each gender pays for car insurance out of their paychecks. The average male salary in Indiana is $60,734. The average female salary is $44,336. This is reflected in wages for common jobs.

Poverty by Age and Gender

In 2017, the number of jobs in Indianapolis declined from 416,000 employees to 414,000 employees. This is a .27 percent drop. The top five occupations in 2017 were a mix of different types of jobs, from management to production.

- 5400 Southeastern Avenue, Eastbound lane: The police were pulling over a long line of people for tickets. On this road, traffic speeds up because it’s going to the Interstate.
- 465 northbound between 10th and Crawfordsville: About 14 police officers were pulling cars over. It seemed very dangerous because everyone was slamming on brakes trying to figure out what was going on.
- I-465 west & east between Meridian and Allisonville: Located on the north side of Indianapolis.
These are a little bit dated. But cities don’t change much. And neither do the speed traps.

Indianapolis seems like a less safe city than typical for crime, whether it’s property crime or violent crime. Fortunately, at least for motor vehicle theft, there are some things you can do to protect yourself.
Traffic in Indianapolis
We’ve all been there. Blasting music on the way to work, having a good time, ready to take on the day. The traffic is flowing smoothly. Just as you think, “Today will be clear,” the first brake light comes on.
Then the second. And the third. Soon, the entire highway is flooded with cars putting on their brake lights. The speed of your car slows to a crawl and your day just got in a little longer. No one likes a traffic jam. And no one likes taking 40 minutes to get to work.
In this section, we cover all things traffic in Indianapolis. That includes congestion, commute times, how good or bad the drivers are, and where to get your car repaired if you get into an accident.
Let’s jump right in.
Traffic is the worst. To find out just how bad traffic is in Indianapolis, we took a look at two major international traffic indexes—INRIX and TomTom. They rate cities around the world on scores relating to traffic, including congestion.
INRIX ranked Indianapolis 177th worst in the world for the year 2018 and 38th worst in the United States. They based this decision, in part, on three statistics.

TomTom ranked Indianapolis 379th in the world. It looked at 1.65 billion kilometers of roads to form the following statistics:
- The best day for traffic: December 25
- The worst day for traffic: January 12
- Average congestion on highways: 7 percent
- Average congestion on non-highways: 18 percent
On the average morning commute during peak hours, the congestion is 22 percent. A trip that would typically take 30 minutes would take an additional seven minutes during this time.
On the average evening commute during peak hours, the congestion is 35 percent. A trip that would typically take 30 minutes would take an additional eleven minutes.
When it comes to traffic congestion, we know that the peak traffic times are the worst. This means morning and evening rush hours, when congestion levels can reach 20–30 percent, according to TomTom.
However, what are the commute times and commuter methods, and do they differ from the nationwide averages?
According to Data USA, the average commute time in Indianapolis is 22.5 minutes. This is three minutes shorter than the average commute time nationwide at 25.5 minutes. The majority of commutes in Indianapolis are 24 minutes or less.
This is much different compared to the majority of commutes nationwide.

Also according to Data USA, most Indianapolis commuters get to work by car, with carpooling second. This is typical compared to the nationwide averages.

A higher percentage of Indianapolis residents actually get to work by car compared to the nationwide average. Around the same percentage carpool. How do these statistics relate to car insurance? How safe are Indianapolis streets and roads?
When it comes to driving in Indianapolis, the one question you probably want an answer to is, “How safe are the roads?”
The answer is, “It’s complicated.”
Each county in America has its own vehicle fatality statistics, courtesy of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) State Crash Reports. They generally paint of picture of driving challenges in an area based on the circumstances of the crashes.
For these statistics, we looked at Marion County for nine different circumstances related to traffic fatalities.
There were 495 fatalities in Marion County between 2013 and 2017.
The largest category is single-vehicle fatalities, followed by roadway departures and passenger car fatalities. Intersection-related fatlities are a distant third, along with speeding and alcohol-related fatalities.
Roadway departures often occur in rural areas, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Single-vehicle crashes are sometimes caused by roadway departures as well. This seems to imply there are some rural areas in Marion County.
There are fewer intersection-related fatalities than one would expect. This is given Indianapolis’s size as a major metropolitan area and that intersection-related fatalities affect urban populations more often than rural.
Alcohol-impaired and speeding fatalities are a distant fourth and fifth, respectively. This is a positive sign compared to other areas, some of which have over 200 fatalities in both alcohol-impaired and speeding, with the same population size.
According to the NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, the majority of crashes in Indiana occur on arterial roads. These are high-volume roads that move a lot of people quickly from one part of the city to the next.

These arterial roads pose unique driving challenges, including people merging on side-streets, constant stopping and starting, and merging between lanes. These cognitive demands can lead to making an incorrect decision and causing an accident.
There were 23 railway incidents in Indianapolis between 2012 and 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Operation Lifesaver, a railway safety education organization, has some tips for driving safely around train tracks.
- Trains and cars don’t mix.
- The train you see is closer and faster-moving than you think.
- Be aware that trains cannot stop quickly.
- Never drive around lowered gates—it’s illegal and deadly.
- Don’t get trapped on the tracks.
- If your vehicle ever stalls on the tracks, get out and get away from the tracks, even if you don’t see a train.
- At a multiple track crossing waiting for a train to pass, watch out for a second train on the other tracks.
- When you need to cross train tracks, go to a designated crossing, look both ways, and cross the tracks quickly.

Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report
Bad drivers cause accidents, which lead to increased car insurance rates. Good driving leads to lower car insurance rates. Which are Indianapolis’s drivers?
Every year, Allstate does its Best Drivers Report to analyze how good or bad drivers are in cities around America. In it, the company looks at two statistics.
The first is the average time between claims for each driver. The second is hard-braking incidents.

Indianapolis ranked 75 in 2019, five positions better than in 2018.
The average driver in Indianapolis files a claim every 9.5 years, which is about a year better than the national average. Its hard-braking incident rate is slightly worse than the national average, 21 to 19.
So drivers in Indianapolis are roughly in the middle. Of course, we know bad drivers lead to accidents, which raise rates. But you might be wondering, “How does good driving lead to better rates?”
You might be surprised that it’s more than not getting a ticket or into an accident. Companies offer apps that use telematics to track your driving. If you’re a good driver, you can lower your rates by up to 15 percent with many companies.

Ridesharing is a good way to get around town if you don’t have a car or are looking for a fun night out with the risk of driving after drinking.
To take a look at ridesharing rates in Indianapolis, we turned to Ride Guru and created a hypothetical trip from the Indianapolis International Airport to Lucas Oil Stadium, where the Indianapolis Colts play. The trip is 13.6 miles and takes 20 minutes.
The rates started at $22 and stopped at $65.

Uber and Lyft prices are the exact same. Carmel is high but it’s also limousine service.
Of course, there’s another side to ridesharing and that’s the drivers. If you’re a driver, you might be looked for a little extra insurance as you’re moving passengers from place to place.
Many companies now offer additional rideshare insurance. In Indiana, seven companies do. They are Allstate, Erie, Farmers, GEICO, Safeco, State Farm, and USAA.
Many of the insurances offer protection for different aspects of ridesharing. Some will offer it for a particular part of the trip, such as when moving a passenger from place to place. Others are more comprehensive.

Cost of Alternate Transportation in Indianapolis
There are three active electric scooter companies in Indianapolis, including two heavy hitters in Bird and Lime and a smaller one in Spin.
According to the IndyStar, electric scooters have been popular in Indianapolis since they’ve arrived, with the average scooter being used just under four times per day. This is useful, as it costs $15,000 for each company to set up in Indianapolis.
The IndyStar also reports that after a year Bird and Lime have raised their prices for riding the scooters. Bird and Lime both initially charged a $1 unlocking fee and then 15 cents per minute ridden.
As of this writing, Bird charges 29 cents per minute to ride while Lime charges 27 cents. Newcomer Spin hasn’t released their prices yet, at least according to the IndyStar.
Parking in Indianapolis
According to Downtown Indy, Inc., there are 73,000 parking spaces available in downtown Indianapolis. These include side-street parking, off-street lots, and parking garages.
These range from first hour $5 to $10 or more and daily maximums between $5 and $24 or more. The first hour for parking meters is $1.50 with a daily maximum of $21. All metered parking is free on Sundays.
Air Quality in Indianapolis
Every year the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency releases an Air Quality Index Report that analyzes the air quality in metro areas all around the country.
According to the EPA, air quality can be influenced by several air pollutants, some of which come from cars. These include ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, lead, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Overall, the air quality in Indianapolis has been good. However, 2018 marked the worst year out of the three surveyed.

Military Bases within an Hour of Indianapolis
There are just three military installations in Indiana, according to MilitaryBases.com. The closest one to Indianapolis is Grissom Air Reserve Base Air Force.
Located a little over one hour away in Kokomo, Indiana, Grissom is a refueling base. It played support roles in conflicts such as the one in Grenada and dropped supplies in the desert conflicts.
It is a small base, but according to MilitaryBases.com, “There are tentative plans to expand the base in the future, but at this time there are none plans officially scheduled.”

As of now, it’s fifth in overall market share, has strong financial ratings, great customer satisfaction, and some of the lowest rates around. In Indianapolis, its rates are a full 52 percent below the average.

It’s around $4,000 cheaper than the most expensive company (Liberty Mutual). It’s solely available for military personnel and their immediate families, such as spouses and children.
Unique City Laws
Every city has unique laws. Here are four categories of laws that affect pretty much everyone.
It appears that Indianapolis has no specific hands-free laws for its city. However, there is a larger set of laws in Indiana that prohibits certain cell phone uses for different age groups.
According to Sevenish Law Firm, people under the age of 18 are prohibited from using any electronic device, including hands-free devices, while driving.
In addition, everyone is prohibited from sending, writing, or reading electronic messages while driving. This effectively makes it illegal to text and drive. While Indianapolis does not have a specific hands-free law, South Bend passed a hands-free law and the Indiana state government has been looking into hands-free laws as well.
According to Bizfluent, food vendors get their specific regulations from local governments rather than the state. However, there are still some state regulations that apply to all municipalities.
A food truck under Indiana regulations would be considered a retail food establishment as it sells directly to customers. As such, it would need to follow regulations in regards to the storage and handling, food training for workers, and paperwork to fill out for the state and for the county.
Marion County, where Indianapolis is located, has a food truck application process that includes five parts.
