What is car liability insurance?

First of all, it is important to understand what auto liability insurance is. Liability insurance policies are designed to protect your finances in the event you are in an accident.

In most cases, your liability policy will cover damage caused by your vehicle in an accident where you are deemed “at-fault” though it can also over you in a no-fault accident when the other driver does not have insurance coverage or is underinsured.

Liability insurance has three different coverages included the overall policy.

They include the following:

  • Per Person Bodily Injury Coverage
  • Per Accident Bodily Injury Coverage
  • Property Damage Coverage

When reviewing a liability policy, the maximum amount the policy will cover you for is expressed in limits and are often written in abbreviated notation such as: 10/40/20 where the 10 means that you have up to $10,000 in per person bodily injury coverage, up to $40,000 in per accident bodily injury coverage and up to $20,000 in property damage coverage.

In order to understand what these limits mean, it is important to understand what each sub-policy covers.

Here is an illustration:

If you are involved in an accident where you have rear-ended another vehicle and are at-fault, your liability insurance policy will pay up to $10,000 per person who experiences injury during that accident.

It won’t exceed $40,000 in total payments for injuries that are a direct result of that accident on your behalf.

Additionally, the policy will cover up to $10,000 in damages to the car that you hit on your behalf. Any expense that exceeds these limits will become your responsibility to pay.

One of the most stressful things about being in an accident is filing the car insurance claim. Here are some tips that will take all the stress and uncertainty out of filing a claim after an accident.

Using the Internet to Get Insurance Quotes

The internet is a great tool for locating car liability insurance quotes and comparing offers.

There are two ways you can get insurance quotes from home:

  • Contact insurance companies directly and request a quote
  • Access an insurance broker to get several quotes at once

The main benefit to requesting quotes directly from specific insurance companies is that you choose which companies you get quotes from. This allows you to stay away from less reputable companies and focus your search on companies you actually wish to do business with.

Additionally, an online insurance quote request offered by individual insurance companies tend to be more detailed than those offered by brokerages, so you can receive a more accurate premium quote by doing this on your own.

However, by contacting each insurance company directly, you will spend an inordinate amount of time entering and re-entering your information into each site’s quote request form.

Comparing insurance liability policies can be tough where your limits and deductibles are different.

The main benefit to submitting your quote request through a brokerage is that they represent multiple insurance companies and can return several quotes to you in less time than it would take you to complete one direct quote request with one insurance company.

Reputable brokers will work with insurance companies of all shapes and sizes but tend to shy away from the less reputable companies, so choosing your broker carefully will go a long way to making sure that your information only goes to insurers that you want to work with.

Of course, the quote form is usually less detailed than the ones offered directly on the insurer’s site.

This means that the quote you receive might not be the final premium price you wind up paying when the insurance company gets the more detailed information it needs in order to underwrite your policy such as your driving record, your credit history, the type of car you drive and how many miles you drive in a day.

Getting Quotes From an Insurance Agent

Independent insurance agencies are a great place to get auto liability insurance quotes. Because they are independent, they can represent a number of insurance companies, which means you get the benefit of only having to complete one quote request in order to receive multiple quotes.

Additionally, agents tend to collect very detailed information about you when they process your quote request, so you are more likely to get an accurate quote than if you went online.

And lastly, working through an insurance agent will give you access to companies that do not have an online presence. These are the companies that tend to offer really great insurance for rock-bottom prices mainly due to the fact that they are very effective in controlling expenses.

The bad news is that most insurance agencies are small businesses which mean that your agent is probably extremely busy.

You may have to wait for several hours to several days to get the quotes you want.

Because you are not dealing with a secured online portal, giving your personal information to an agent can be a little risky in terms of identity theft either by the agent themselves or a customer who catches sight of your file on his or her desk.

Regardless of the way you choose to obtain your liability insurance quotes, it is important to make sure that you are comparing apples to apples in terms of what your liability policy limits and deductibles are as well as checking the status of the insurance company by reviewing rating sites.
