Virginia Car Insurance Requirements

Minimum car insurance requirements for vehicles registered in the State of Virginia are issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and can be found on the State Department’s website (dmv.state.va.us). In order to obtain license plates owners must satisfy State minimum car insurance requirements for liability insurance coverage of:

  • $25,000 coverage for bodily injury to one person
  • $50,000  in coverage for injury/death to two or more persons
  • $20,000 in coverage for property damage

Virginia is very unique as it’s the only state we know about where drivers can waive these auto insurance requirements by paying a $500 fee to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) allowing operation of a motor vehicle at a drivers own risk.

While on the surface this allows many drivers an opportunity to drive legally without facing license suspension or fines its a very unwise move to ever operate a vehicle without car insurance. In fact, we think this is probably one of the dumbest laws ever passed in the car insurance industry. Other states like California have introduced limited car insurance coverage plans such as the “California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program” for families with lower income providing eligible drivers with very low cost auto insurance – plans like these help protect other drivers from reducing the number of uninsured vehicles on the road whereas Virginia has created an opportunity to increase these numbers.

What Car Insurance Companies offer policies in Virginia?

Virginia is a smaller market but definitely a competitive one. Drivers have a number of choices to choose from when looking for a car insurance company including many of the big brand names such as State Farm, Progressive, GEICO and Nationwide. However, much like the purchase of any financial product you should always compare car insurance companies and the best way to start car insurance quotes comparison is online. There are a number of things you can do to help compare policy quotes equally including:

  • Ask about policy limits and deductibles. Make sure any polices you are comparing have equal limits and deductibles. Sometimes one quote can be substantially cheaper but so can the amount of your coverage or out of pocket cost.
  • Ask about car insurance discounts. Most car insurance companies offer similar discounts including multi-vehicle and multi-policy discounts but some also offer other discounts which may not be calculated in all the quotes you compare.
  • Compare the intangible factors such as hours of operation, how to file a claim and payment options. Many times some smaller companies have no online account management or require you to manually write a check for premiums every month. Think about how these factors are important to you.
