Hastings Mutual History

The company has been around for a great deal of time. They first came into existence back in 1885. Initially, they only sold insurance to protect people from windstorms.

At that time, it was referred to as the Michigan Mutual Tornado, Cyclone, and Windstorm company. Hastings, Michigan had recently experienced tornadoes in 1880 and 1882.

By 1925, Hastings Mutual had become the second largest mutual windstorm insurance provider on the globe and continued to prove successful, even during the Great Depression.

The company transformed itself into a general insurance company on January 15, 1959.

Hastings Mutual Car Insurance Products

Car insurance products offered by the company are similar to those offered by automotive insurers throughout the world. They provide all types of coverage, including insurance for:

An additional threat that the company insures is less well-known as GAP coverage.

Since vehicles lose value as they age, there is the possibility that a car owner could end up owing more on their car than the car is worth, a situation which is known as being “upside down.”

If your car is destroyed or stolen, GAP coverage will make sure that you don’t owe anything to the bank.

The company also sells something that they refer to as the Multi-Protection Guard (MPG) Coverage Program, which protects against many threats that are not included in most insurance policies. Situations covered include:

  • Auto leases and loans
  • Car Replacement
  • Travel Interruption
  • Theft of GPS device
  • Pet Injury or Death

Another service provided by the company is insurance for corporate cars and other vehicles, referred to as C.A.R.S.

Pros of Hastings Mutual Car Insurance

One of the benefits of working with Hastings Mutual Auto Insurance is the fact that they offer excellent customer service.

The advantage of great customer service is common among companies such as Hastings, which are limited in the number of customers that they serve, allowing them to spend more time with each of their customers.

Many of the products offered by the company are more innovative than typical auto insurance policies.

Not everybody will need these types of coverage, of course, but those who can benefit them will be pleased with the ease of mind that they bring. Very few auto insurers provide coverage for situations such as injured pets or GPS theft.

In addition to car insurance, Hastings sells insurance for:

  • Homeowners
  • Manufactured homes
  • RVs
  • Farms
  • Businesses
  • Renters

Customers who purchase two or more types of insurance qualify for discounts that reduce their costs dramatically.

Cons of Hastings Mutual Car Insurance

Not everything about the insurance company is top notch, however. As with many local insurers, their website does not provide the kind of functionality that most modern users would expect from it.

As a matter of fact, the website is not always working.

In addition to this, the company does not allow customers to sign up or change their policy through the website.

Shoppers are instead required to contact an agent directly. If an agent isn’t located near the caller, they will be redirected to the nearest agent, and sometimes connected to the main office.
