What Are Motorcycle Clubs?
Motorcycle clubs exist all around the country and have large followings in each state. These clubs are a great way for motorcycle enthusiasts to get together in a community to ride, organize community events, and even raise funds for charities. Despite certain negative stereotypes that portray motorcycle clubs as criminal biker organizations or violent groups, only a very small percentage are affiliated with any criminal activity.
The overwhelming majority of Americans who ride in a club are just in it for making friendships, sharing a passion for motorcycles, and leaving a positive impact on their communities. Clubs can revolve around specific brands or styles of motorcycle, touring landscapes for sightseeing, or promoting a cause such as veteran assistance awareness.

The History of Motorcycle Clubs
With several chapters of clubs in each state throughout the United States, motorcycle clubs are quite common nowadays. Their history takes us back to the early 20th century. In New York City in 1903, the New York Motorcycle Club and the Alpha Motorcycle Club of Brooklyn merged into the Federation of American Motorcyclists. This merger spawned the first legally recognized motorcycle club in the country and created the path for many more motorcycle enthusiasts to open their independent clubs and chapters.
In the past, certain motorcycle gangs and clubs have gained notoriety for being involved in criminal activity and violent behavior. These clubs still exist and are usually referred to as “1 percenters,” though these clubs have seen sharp declines in their active members in recent years as well as strict investigation from authorities to minimize their relevancy. Thankfully, the majority of biker clubs agree they are a negative side of biking culture and should not be associated with the majority friendly and welcoming culture of motorcycling.
The Largest Motorcycle Club in the U.S.
With several motorcycle clubs active throughout the United States, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) remains the largest with over 200,000 active members. You can find chapters of this club in almost every state with over 1,200 chartered clubs open to anyone who would like to join. They serve as an umbrella club that organizes large community outreach programs across the country and helps smaller clubs gain members and funding.
