Requirements for Automobile Insurance in the State of Texas

Every individual state has its own requirements for what type of automobile insurance motor vehicle drivers must carry within their jurisdiction.

The state of Texas expects motor vehicle drivers to assume financial responsibility for any accidents they cause.

Most drivers comply with this regulation by purchasing automobile liability insurance.

All motor vehicle drivers in Texas are required at a minimum to carry bodily injury coverage and property damage coverage.

In addition, if the vehicle is being financed through a loan from a bank, the Lone Star State also requires the policy owner to carry collision and comprehensive coverage.

The average cost of basic automobile insurance in the state of Texas is $955 a year. If you carry collision insurance you can expect to pay an additional $337 per year.

Bodily Injury Coverage

Bodily injury coverage pays for injuries to others should a driver become involved in an accident that he or she caused.

In Texas, there is a minimum amount of bodily injury coverage for motor vehicle drivers you can buy from ABBA Car Insurance.

As of January 1, 2011, the limits include:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury to a single person
  • $60,000 for bodily injury to two or more people
  • $25,000 for property damage.

The penalties for violating the financial responsibility law are stiff. Texas fines drivers between $175 and $350 for a first conviction.

Subsequent convictions can result in a fine up to $1,000, suspension of one’s driving license and even automobile impoundment.

When a motor vehicle driver purchases an automobile insurance policy from ABBA Car Insurance, the company sends him or her a proof-of-insurance card.

Property Damage Coverage

Property damage insurance covers the damage to the other driver’s car, as well to any personal effects in the car or damage to other property such as a yard or a home, in the event of an accident caused by the policyholder.

As noted above, the state of Texas requires motor vehicle drivers to carry at least $25,000 in property damage insurance.

Other Types of Automobile Insurance

The types of insurance described above are the minimum automobile insurance policies the state of Texas requires motor vehicle drivers to carry.

The prudent driver will insure beyond the minimum, depending upon the value of his or her own automobile.

Some other popular types of automobile insurance include:

Collision Coverage

This type of insurance pays for physical damage to the policyholder’s own car in the event of an accident.

It’s highly recommended for any driver whose car is worth $4,000 or more.

Comprehensive Coverage

This type of insurance pays for physical damage to the policyholder’s car caused by fire, theft or any unforeseen act that could result in a loss.

It’s also highly recommended for any driver whose car is worth $4,000 or more.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Despite the stiff penalties for driving without insurance imposed by the Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Act Texas passed in 1981, it’s been estimated that 21 percent of the drivers on the Lone Star State’s highways do not carry automobile insurance policies.

Uninsured or underinsured policies will pay for your injuries or property damage up to your policy limit in the event that you are involved in an accident with someone who is not carrying insurance.
