The ratings given to Travelers by each of these agencies can tell you a little something about the company’s overall financial health and the overall satisfaction of its customers.

Looking at the AM Best rating of A++, for example, indicates that Travelers has a superior ability to meet the insurance needs of its customers based on its overall financial strength.

A company with a healthy bottom line is more likely to pay out a claim if you should ever be forced to file one after a car accident.

The NAIC complaint ratio for Travelers also indicates that this is indeed the case.

Moody’s and S&P have also looked at the financial strength and stability of Travelers and determined that the outlook for the company is bright.

The Better Business Bureau has also given Travelers an A+, but this time it is for customer care.

Consumer Reports also gave Travelers a rating of Excellent which underscores the rating given to them by the BBB.

All of these high scores don’t come easy, but Travelers knows that this hard work is worth it in order to provide its customers with the care that they deserve.

Travelers Insurance Company History

In 1864 Hartford resident James G. Batterson was a man on a mission.  The mission was to provide quality insurance product to his friends and neighbors at an affordable price.

With help from a local banker named James Bolter and a few other friends, Travelers Insurance Company was born.

The first policies to be offered by Travelers were accident insurance. BY 1897 through Travelers had issued its first automobile policy, making roadways across the midwest a little more secure for America’s first car owners.

Travelers wasn’t just busy insuring people and property against loss at the turn of the last century; it was also looking ahead to the future of the insurance industry.

In an effort to make that future brighter for its customers, Travelers open an insurance school in 1903 in order to ensure that all of its agents were well trained in insurance regulations and customer care.

Travelers continued to remain innovative for the next 40 years as well by organizing a corps of safety engineers in 1904, offering aircraft liability insurance by 1919, underwriting the Manhattan Project during World War II, and establishing a weather research center in 1956.

The company also remained on the cutting edge of technology and customer care by introducing new coverage options for electronic data processing in 1961 and issuing accident policies for space flight and lunar exploration in 1969.

Travelers then established the Office of Consumer Information in 1971 so that customers from any insurance company could call into the toll-free number and comment on insurance issues or ask insurance-related questions. By the 1990s Travelers was also issuing insurance policies designed to protect people who used their personal computers for online banking.

The new millennium brought with it new challenges like how to insure a hybrid vehicle and Travelers was right there to answer the call by offering a national discount in 2006 for drivers who choose to go greener.

Travelers also expressed its social consciousness in 2016 by creating the Early Severity Predictor which helps injured employees prevent chronic pain and opioid use.

This proven track record for phenomenal employee and customer care alongside continual innovation has helped Travelers remain string for over the 1860s.

Travelers’ Market Share

Ranked 106th on the Fortune 500 list of largest U. S. Companies, Travelers controlled 1.9 percent of the total market share in 2018. Travelers has also exhibited steady growth over the last four years. Take a look.

This type of growth is pretty impressive from a company that only has around 30,000 employees. Keeping overhead down is just one of the many ways that Travelers exercises fiscally responsible policies in order to keep customer costs down though.

Low overhead and steady financial growth also increase the chances that Travelers will pay out claims faster if you should ever need to file one with them.

Travelers’ Position for the Future

The market share growth demonstrated by Travelers over the last four years is not the only indication that the company’s future is bright.

The increase in direct premiums written over the same time period, combined with the low loss ration that Travelers displays are also key indicators of the financial stability of the company.

According to Investopedia, the loss ratio is defined as “the losses an insurer incurs due to paid claims as a percentage of premiums earned.”

Travelers’ low loss ratio means that even though it is paying out claims it is not losing money at a rate that would cause it to file for a rate increase in order to prevent major financial losses.

The low loss ratio and the willingness of Travelers to pay out claims more readily are the direct results of the high amount of direct premiums written which Investopedia points are representative of “the growth of a company’s insurance business during a given period.”

A lower loss ration combined with a high amount of direct premiums written translates into Travelers’ ability to pay out claims to its customers with minimal hassle.

Travelers’ Online Presence

The financial growth and stability that Travelers displays, give it the freedom to remain innovative and present in the market places that customers frequent the most.

In this day and age, one of the largest marketplaces is online and Travelers is primed to help you make the most of your customer experience with them by offering several ways to do business with them online.

One of the best ways to get started is to register with Travelers in order to gain access to a plethora of online tools.

Some of these tools include:

  • Online bill pay
  • Viewing/Printing Auto Insurance Cards
  • Quote information
  • Reporting A claim
  • Checking the status of a Claim

Travelers also has a Twitter and a Facebook account to make contacting them simple and fast.

Travelers Commercials

Travelers isn’t just present online; it also has some of the best television commercials out there streaming right into the homes of its customers.

Who doesn’t understand the plight of a fretful doggie just trying to make sure that his most precious possessions are protected from loss or damage?

The quest that Fido is on in one of Travelers’ most popular TV commercials is much like the quest that many people undertake every day to find just the right insurance provider who can protect the people and things that they care about the most.

Travelers in the Community

Online and television commercials are just two of the many ways that Travelers reaches out to its customers.

Another place that Travelers has a commanding presence is in the communities and neighborhoods that it serves. One such place is Puerto Rico where Travelers has partnered with All Hands and Hearts to help with disaster relief.

In the last two years, Travelers employees have logged over 250,000 volunteer hours.

CEO Alan Schnitzer also points out that:

Over the last decade, [Travelers has] contributed more than $218 million toward important causes.

Some of the charitable causes and community outreach that Travelers engages in include:

  • Academic and Career Programs
  • Neighborhood Reconstruction and Development Projects
  • Arts and Entertainment Funding

Travelers also promote transparency about their funding and philanthropic endeavors by providing the public at large with an annual Community Report.

The company with the red umbrella also encourages its employees to donate to their favorite causes and participates in the Matching Gifts of Money Program.

Through this program, Travelers matches up to $500 of charitable giving put forth by its part-time and full-time employees.

Travelers Employees

Travelers’ dedication to families, communities, and customers is just one of the many reasons why employees love to work for this company.

Some of the comments posted by employees on sites like Glassdoor include the phrases “Great Benefits,” “Great Company,” and “Great Place to Work”.

The atmosphere at Travelers is very inclusive as well. In fact, the company has won a number of Best Place to Work Awards because of this.

Some of these awards include:

  • Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion
  • America’s Best Employers, Forbes, 2015-2018
  • America’s Best Employers for Diversity, Forbes, 2019
  • America’s Best Employers for Women, Forbes, 2019
  • Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality, Human Rights Campaign Foundation, 2016-2019

Being relatively small both in employee size and market share allows Travelers to remain competitive in the areas where it offers coverage.

Looking at the median cost of car insurance for customers of Travelers compared to the median cost for customers of American Family underscores this.

Both Travelers and American Family control approximately 1.9 percent of the market share a piece and their rates only differ across the board by around $30.

Average Travelers Male vs. Female Rates

Common wisdom holds that men are more costly to insure than women because males are more likely to engage in risky behavior behind the wheel.

It might surprise you to know then that a 2017 study conducted by Consumer Federation of America revealed that:

Most large auto insurers charge 40 and 60-year-old women higher rates than men, often more than $100 per year.

Some states such as California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts have outlawed the use of gender as a factor to be used by car insurance companies as they set your rates.

No matter where they operate though, Travelers is already ahead of the trend when it comes to gender equality. Take a look.

GroupMarried 35-year old femaleMarried 35-year old maleMarried 60-year old femaleMarried 60-year old maleSingle 17-year old femaleSingle 17-year old maleSingle 25-year old femaleSingle 25-year old male

The data reveals that Travelers has some of the best rates no matter which gender you are.

Travelers also has rates that are competitive with USAA which is significant considering that USAA only services military members and their families which is a very niche corner of the market.

Travelers isn’t just as well-priced as USAA, it is actually better priced than its closest competitor American Family when it comes to insuring 35-year-old drivers in general.

Average Travelers Rates by Make and Model

Gender isn’t the only thing that car insurance companies use when setting your rates.

Did you know that how someone else drives the same make and model vehicle that you own could drive up the price that you pay for car insurance?

It’s true. If a particular type of car has statistically been proven to be involved in more accidents it becomes considered risky to insure.

Vehicle safety features act as a factor as your car insurance provider determines your rates as well.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) also points out that:

Insurers not only look at how safe a particular vehicle is to drive and how well it protects occupants, but also how much potential damage it can inflict on another car. If a specific vehicle model has a higher chance of inflicting damage when in an accident, an insurer may charge more for liability insurance.

Travelers does a good job of keeping rates consistent for its customers though; no matter what they drive. Take a look.

Average Travelers Commute Rates

The fact that insurance companies use things such as your age or gender when setting your rates might seem surprising.

What is not surprising though is that how much you drive has a direct impact on how high or low your rates might be. It’s important to consider your commute before you buy a home or purchase car insurance. After all, more time spent behind the wheel increases the possibility that you might be involved in an accident.

Take a look at the table below to see how Travelers compares when it comes to rates set by the distance of your commute.

Group10 miles commute. 6000 annual mileage.25 miles commute. 12000 annual mileage.
American Family$3,401.30$3,484.88

As you can see, Travelers only charges around $60 more for 15,000 more annual commute miles. That’s less than a penny a mile.

Commute rates from Travelers also outpace companies like State Farm who charges its customers almost $200 more for the same additional milage.

Average Travelers Coverage Levels

It is common knowledge that the more of anything you purchase the higher the price will be.

The same logic applies when shopping for your car insurance coverage. Travelers knows this though and has done its very best to keep its prices down no matter what coverage level you decide upon.

Take a look at the table below to see how Travelers stacks up against the other major car insurance companies offering the same types of coverage.

GroupLow CoverageMedium CoverageHigh Coverage
American Family$3,368.49$3,544.37$3,416.40

While Travelers rates might not be comparable to USAA, their rates are definitely better than the rates offered to customers by Liberty Mutual or Allstate.

Both of these competitors charge between $200 to $1,200 more for the same level of coverage offered by Travelers which makes Travelers the clear choice.

Keeping rates low and quality of service high are just two of the many ways that Travelers demonstrate its dedication to customer care.

Average Travelers Credit History Rates

Commute rates and coverage levels seem like obvious factors that should be used when determining your car insurance rates, but did you know that your credit history could end up costing you more money for your policy if your credit score is low?

Consumer Reports released a 2015 study that revealed how your credit score is being used by car insurance companies.

What Consumer Reports found was that:

Single drivers who had merely good scores paid $68 to $526 more per year, on average, than similar drivers with the best scores, depending on the state they called home.

This seems unfair to low-income drivers who may not be able to prevent a bad credit score which is why several states like California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts have passed legislation which prevents your credit score from being used as a factor when setting your car insurance rates.

Take a look what having a low credit score could do to your rates no matter who you choose as your car insurance provider.

American Family$3,169.53$2,691.74$4,467.98
Liberty Mutual$5,604.24$4,388.18$8,802.22
State Farm$2,853.00$2,174.26$4,951.20

As you can see, Travelers is on par with most of its competitors when it comes to using your credit score as a factor in setting your rates. Travelers is always compliant with all federal, state, and local laws though so your rates could be lower than what is reflected above depending upon where you live.

Average Travelers Driving Record Rates

Whether you believe that gender, age, or credit history are fair factors to be used when determining car insurance rates, the one thing that we all agree on is that how you drive should have a direct impact on how much you pay for your car insurance coverage.

If you speed, drive recklessly, or act irresponsibly enough to get behind the wheel after one too many then you should pay more.

How much more you will pay though depends on your car insurance provider. Take a look.

Looking at the numbers reveals that it could cost you as much as $2,000 more a year for your premiums if you choose to drink and drive.

You should also be aware that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.

Avoid the hassle and the heartache that comes from tragedy and always designate a driver.

If you have been caught doing a few miles over the speed limit or have been involved in an accident your rates will also be more likely to go up as you can see.  The bottom line then is to always act in a responsible fashion when out on any roadway behind the wheel

Travelers’ Programs

One of the most popular programs offered by Travelers is the Responsible Driver Plan.

Commonly referred to as accident forgiveness, the Responsible Driver Plan is so much more than simply a way to be forgiven for an accident.

This plan also has Minor Violation Forgiveness built into it which allows you to be forgiven for one minor violation every 36 months.

Travelers also has the Premier Responsible Driver Plan which offers a decreasing deductible for every six months that you drive without an accident or incident.

The Premier Responsible Driver Plan also has a Total Loss Deductible Waiver built into it that removes the possibility that you will have to pay a deductible if your car is totaled.

Travelers also has the IntelliDrive program in certain states which scores your driving over a 90 day period through a smartphone app and could save you a few dollars in your policy’s first term or beyond.

Canceling Your Policy

It is not ideal, but sometimes the need arises for you and your car insurance provider to part ways. If this happens you will want to make sure that you are canceling your policy with Travelers the right way.

Failure to do so could result in a block being placed on your tag in some states due to non-compliance with their compulsory insurance laws.

You could also find yourself tangled up in cancellation fees or reinstatement fees from state and local governments if you don’t follow the proper procedures when canceling your car insurance policy.

Should you need to cancel your policy with travelers you can simply give one of their representatives a call at 1-800-842-5075 and they will walk you through the process.

Be sure to have the following in hand before you call:

  • Your personal information such as your name, address, and phone number
  • Your policy number with Travelers
  • The date you want your policy to end
  • And your new insurer’s name and policy number, if you’re switching providers

You might also need a proof of sale or other documentation if you are removing car insurance completely from your vehicle.

Cancelations go into effect immediately so be sure that you do not have a gap between the date that you have canceled your coverage with Travelers and the date that your new policy begins with your new car insurance provider.

How to Make a Claim

No matter how careful you are or how much you prepare sometimes life throws unwelcomed surprises at you.

If the unfortunate should occur and you find yourself involved in a car accident it will be a comfort to know that Travelers is committed to making the claims process as easy as possible for its customers.

From the fender bender in the parking lot to a head-on collision, Travelers will be there for you. Keep scrolling to find out more.

Ease of Making a Claim

If you find yourself involved in an accident the first question that will probably come to mind after the dust settles will be “How do I file a claim?”

The process of filing a claim can begin one of two ways:

  • Online
  • By phone at 1-800-252-463324 hours a day seven days a week.

When beginning the claims process you should have as many of the following items available as you possibly can:

  • The accident report
  • photos of the damage and/or accident scene
  • Your contact information
  • Your policy information
  • The date of the accident
  •  A list of the types of injuries and/or damage/loss that you are reporting
  • The contact information of the other party involved

The more information that you can provide your agent the faster he or she can get the ball rolling with your claim.

Premiums Written

Before you ever find yourself in the middle of the claims process you should give the number of premiums written by your car insurance provider a little thought.

In fact, it’s best to think about this before you even purchase your policy.

Why? Because the amount of premiums written by an insurance provider is directly reflective of their ability to pay out for claims filed by their customers.

Investopedia defines premiums written as:

An accounting term in the insurance industry used to describe the total amount customers are required to pay for insurance coverage on policies issued by a company during a specific period of time

Premiums written are therefore a reflection of how financially stable a car insurance provider is.

The more financially stable your car insurance provider is the less difficulty they will have paying out claims filed by their customers.

Loss Ratio

The loss ratio is another key indicator that can tell you how good your insurance company has done at pricing risk.

Higher loss ratios can indicate financial distress in a company. With its loss ration remaining steady at around 64 percent between 2015 to 2018 then Travelers has proven that it can weather any financial storm the market throws at it and still remain one of the best car insurance providers for customer care.
